Breaking:Apinto Chiefs reportedly kick against renewal of Goldgields' mining Lease

The Apinto Divisional Council, traditional owners of the land where GoldFields Ghana's Tarkwa Mine operates, has reportedly resolved to oppose the renewal of the company's mining lease. This decision follows deliberations and an inspection of the mine earlier this week, with the Council agreeing to call on the government not to renew Gold Fields' mining lease when it expires in April 2027. The Council is expected to officially announce its position at a press conference today (Friday).

The chiefs reached this decision after assessing what they described as the company's limited impact on the customary land despite decades of mining activities. Sources indicate the Council believes Gold Fields has not delivered sufficient development to justify the extension of its mineral rights. This sudden U-turn by chiefs who have constantly praised the mining company for infrastructural development has surprised many in Tarkwa, especially the youth who have benefited from scholarship, apprentice, and graduate training programs. The final decision rests with the government, but the views of the traditional landowners are regarded as a critical factor.
