BoG's directive on Ghana cedi coin receives applauds from Sunyani traders

Bank of Ghana's directive on the Ghana cedi coin received applauds from Sunyani traders. The Bank of Ghana issued a statement warning that rejecting the Ghana cedi coin for business transactions is an offense punishable by law. The statement, signed by Miss Aimee Vyda Quashie, the Bank of Ghana's Secretary, said "refusing to sell a product to a buyer simply because the buyer is paying with cedi coins constitutes an offense."

Traders in the Sunyani Business Community lauded the Bank of Ghana's measures. However, some traders told the Ghana News Agency market survey that buyers often failed to recognize, appreciate, and collect the Ghana cedi coins as change. Mr. Osei Boakye, a shop owner, stated that several of his customers failed to collect the 10 pesewas as change. Madam Lucy Agyeiwaa, another trader, said some customers complained the coins were unsafe to handle and easily got missing, suggesting the central bank increase their sizes. Mr. James Ansu, a storekeeper, called for intensified sensitization for buyers but also agreed with some buyers who rejected the coins, suggesting the 10 pesewas coin should be phased out due to its size.
