Berekum Chelsea bus had no security escort during fatal armed robbery attack - Club PRO reveals
Albert Kwabena Diawuo, Public Relations Officer of Berekum Chelsea, disclosed that the club's team bus had no security escort on Sunday night when it was ambushed by armed robbers. Diawuo revealed that travelling without security is a routine practice for the club, stating, "There was no security on our team bus from Samreboi to Berekum. We normally go to away matches without security. We go there, play our game and come back without any incident. It was just yesterday that we had that robbery attack between Bibiani and Nkoso."
The Ghana Premier League side was attacked after their Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex 1996 at DUN's Park. The incident left six players and officials with minor injuries, while forward Dominic Frimpong died after being shot. Frimpong was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Diawuo explained that the team bus was ambushed on their return journey after they lost to Samartex 1996. He said, "After we lost to Samartex 1996, on our way back, between Bibiani and Nkoso, the driver of our team bus saw gunmen lying in ambush. They started shooting, so the driver decided to reverse the bus. Unfortunately, the robbers rushed towards the bus and continued firing at it."
Diawuo noted that the team usually does not stay overnight after away fixtures, opting instead to travel immediately after matches. He stated, "Normally, we don't spend the night after all our away matches." The interview with Diawuo was on Joy FM on Monday, April 13.
