Asantehene urges GRA to widen tax net to informal sector

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged the Board and Management of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to expand the tax net to cover more individuals and businesses in the informal sector to boost domestic revenue. He made this call when the Board and Management of the GRA paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace. He stated, "The focus has always been on workers in the formal sector, while there are many others in the informal sector who can be educated on the need to pay taxes to support national development."

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended the current leadership of the GRA for progress in revenue collection but called for stronger measures against tax leakages and innovative approaches to revenue mobilization. He stressed that Ghana must strengthen domestic revenue generation through taxation to finance its development without heavy reliance on external funding. He proposed that groups such as hairdressers, mechanics, and drivers could form cooperatives to facilitate their incorporation into the tax system. He also encouraged the GRA to consider unconventional approaches to tax collection while improving existing systems.
