Asante Akyem North MP's aide breaks silence on his detention in Netherlands (Audio)

Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament, was arrested on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Parliament confirmed the arrest and said it has been formally informed and is engaging Ghana's diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather further details on the case as investigations and diplomatic processes continue.

Nana Poku Nyantakyi, spokesperson and close friend of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, said his family and associates are still trying to understand the circumstances surrounding his detention in the Netherlands. Nana Poku Nyantakyi said the MP was last in contact with them on Wednesday, when he mentioned he was in the Netherlands after informing them earlier on Saturday that he would be travelling. Nana Poku noted that the exact reason for the MP's detention remains unclear, saying neither the MP nor his legal team has been formally informed of the grounds for the arrest. He explained that "at the moment, we don't know the cause of the arrest because those who effected the arrest haven't even told him anything."

Lawyers are currently engaging authorities to obtain clarity. Nana Poku revealed that even official arrest documentation had not yet been fully accessed by the legal team handling the case in Amsterdam, as processes were still ongoing. He added, "The prosecutor in charge and the legal representatives are still processing and releasing the necessary documents for review." He appealed for calm in public discussions on the matter, urging the media to avoid speculation that could interfere with efforts to resolve the situation, saying, "We want to urge all media houses not to be throwing in things that haven't been confirmed… let's stay calm and don't jeopardise the issues."
