Annual disaster: Resolving accra's flooding crisis
Accra experienced a disaster on the night of June 3, 2015. A petrol station near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange exploded as floodwaters surrounded it. At least 150 people died.
Since 1935, floods in Ghana have killed over 3,000 people, displaced more than 700,000, and erased a significant amount of money in property and livelihoods. In May 2025 alone, heavy rains killed 4 people and displaced more than 3,000 across Greater Accra. In May 2025, NADMO's deputy director confessed publicly that the organisation did not have enough relief items to support flood victims. Flooding has occurred every year since 2016. The Ghana Meteorological Agency warned of rains weeks before they arrived in March 2026.
Ghana passed the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act in 2016.
Quick Summary
Accra continues to experience floods annually, resulting in deaths, displacement, and economic losses - a grimly familiar pattern. Despite past tragedies and promises, the cycle of inaction persists, raising questions about whether any lessons have been learned.
