2026 WC: Mohammed Kudus included in Black Stars' provisional list despite nursing injury
Mohammed Kudus has been included in the Black Stars' provisional squad submitted to FIFA ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite concerns over his fitness. Carlos Queiroz, the 73-year-old coach, has forwarded the mandatory provisional squad to world football's governing body. Kudus' inclusion comes as the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder continues his recovery from a hamstring injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
The 25-year-old had initially been expected to return in April but suffered a setback during rehabilitation. He later underwent a successful operation on the advice of medical specialists. There is hope Kudus could return in time for Ghana's final Group L fixture against Croatia. If selected, the 2026 World Cup would mark Kudus' second appearance on football's biggest stage following his performances at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Since making his senior debut in 2019, Kudus has scored 13 goals in 46 appearances.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to announce the final 26-man squad in the coming days. Queiroz is expected to name his final squad on June 1. Ghana will begin their Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17 before taking on England in Boston on June 23. The Black Stars will conclude the group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 27. Ghana will play international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
