12 firefighters injured while battling petrol tanker fire
Twelve firefighters were injured on Tuesday, March 17th, 2026, while battling a fuel tanker fire at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that the incident occurred after an explosion during cooling operations following the initial containment of the blaze. The fire involved a fuel tanker (GT 5671-22) carrying approximately 54,000 litres of petrol along the Winneba-Accra Highway.
Fire appliances from the Apam and Kasoa Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene at approximately 0558 hours, arriving at 0626 hours. The fire, which had spread to nearby properties, was brought under control by 0758 hours and fully extinguished by 0842 hours. During cooling operations, the tanker reignited and exploded, injuring the firefighters.
Out of the twelve injured personnel, four sustained severe injuries. Three were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, while one was treated at the Potsin Polyclinic. The remaining eight sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site. All severely injured firefighters have since been treated and discharged.
ACFO I Merinder Mary Attigah Mensah, the Central Regional Commander, accompanied by the Director of Operations, DCFO Roberta Aggrey Ghanson, visited the injured personnel and the incident scene. The cause of the crash and fire remain under investigation.
